Are you looking to become a better poker player? You’re here on my blog, so I’m hoping that the answer is yes. I recently started a series of poker lessons in order to help you achieve this goal. If you want to follow along, my first lesson was on Bankroll Management. One of the best ways to improve your skills is by experimenting with new strategies. By using trial and error, you can slowly create good habits and start eliminating bad ones. However, not everyone has access to a good platform for training. Pokerbros is one of my favorite platforms for playing poker online, and I believe it could benefit you in your quest to become a better poker player.

If this is what you’re thinking, the answer is yes. As long as you have a general understanding of poker, you should be playing for real money. In games that are played with no risk, the actions of players do not reflect what they would do in an actual game.

Simply choose a club that has low stakes action and your desired payment method, and you could be playing within minutes. As I mentioned in my first poker lesson, make sure to use proper bankroll management. Do not risk more than you are willing to lose! Lesson #1: Bankroll Management

In this series, I will be giving you guys brief but informative lessons which will hopefully help you bring your poker game to the next level. To start off this series, please follow along as I teach you about bankroll management.

What is Bankroll Management?

Bankroll Management is definitely the most important thing you should learn if you decide to take poker seriously. If you learn this relatively simple concept, and take it seriously, it will put you on the path to making some serious money playing poker.

The term “bankroll” refers to the amount of money you set aside exclusively to play poker. It is separate from all the other finances in your life. – Poker Stars

When I first started playing poker, I deposited a hundred bucks on a popular online poker website. That same day, I hopped into a 200NL game by using my whole $100 balance.

I remember this like it was yesterday. About one hour into the session, I get dealt a pair of kings in the big blind. Nice! A few people limp and the cutoff makes a raise to $15. When it gets to me, I raise it to $35. Everyone folds, except for the initial raiser. He comes in hot with a 4-bet, enough to put me all in. Without a second thought, I happily click the “All-In” button, only to see my opponent’s cards flip over… Pocket Aces. Unfortunately, he held, and all my chips are gone. There I was, sitting at my computer, staring and my balance, which read “0.00”. This brought a swift end to my first poker session.

The moral of the story is that, no matter how well you play, poker involves luck. The term that poker players use is “variance”.

Sometimes broadly used as a synonym for luck, “variance” in fact more specifically refers to the statistical measure of how much results can differ from expectation.

Variance is used to explain the short term upswings or downswings that poker players experience. Here is a simple example to put things more into perspective. You have pocket aces, and your opponent has pocket deuces. You have the option of going all-in before the flop, but you have to risk your whole savings. Would you do it?

Pocket Aces are an overwhelming favorite against pocket deuces. They have about an 83% chance of winning the hand. However, a lot of people would still deny this offer. You still have a 17% chance of going broke!

The point of this extended analogy was to show why bankroll is important. No matter how good of a player you are, you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket.

Bankroll Management is Your Friend

A few weeks after my first poker session, I deposited another hundred dollars. This time, however, I made sure to follow proper bankroll management. I learned from my expensive mistake.

Instead of playing 200NL I hopped into a game of 10NL, using only $10 from my balance. This way, even if I got unlucky, I would have money left over to give it another shot. Slowly, I was able to survive the ups and down and increase my balance on the site. Once I had a balance of $250, I started playing 25NL. This was the start of my poker journey.

Ideally, you should never buy into a game that would risk more than 5% of your entire balance/bankroll. Some poker players even recommend sticking to 1%, but this a little extreme. Everyone experiences downswings, so prepare accordingly. Follow strict bankroll management!
